UV Base Coat

UV Base Coat for vacuum metallization on ABS, PP, PS and Zamak

The UV Base Coat is the first layer applied to the part before vacuum metallization. It anchors the metallization, levels the surface and provides the mirror finish that the Top Coat will later protect. For flexible TPU parts, Corquímica offers the UV Base Coat Flex.

In practiceIn practice, the plastic or Zamak part is spray-coated with the Base Coat, cured under ultraviolet light in seconds and moved on to the metallizing chamber. Without the base coat, the deposited aluminum loses gloss and may peel off.
Recommended solventThis product is always recommended with a solvent formulation developed by Corquímica, to best deliver the expected result. View solvents.

UV Base Coat: common questions

uv base coatbase coat for metallizationuv coating for abs
What is a UV base coat?

It is the coating applied before vacuum metallization. It gives the part adhesion and leveling, and prepares the surface to receive the metallization and then the Top Coat.

What is the difference between a base coat and a top coat?

The base coat sits under the metallization and anchors it. The top coat sits over the metallization and protects it against scratches, wear and chemical attack.

Which solvent should I use with the UV Base Coat?

Corquímica always recommends a solvent formulation developed in-house for the UV Base Coat, to best deliver the result the customer expects. Tell us about your process and the team will recommend the solvent.

Which UV base coat should I use on ABS, PP or PS?

Each plastic has a specific base coat. Corquímica offers base coats for ABS, PP, PS, Zamak and TPU. Send a part for testing and the technical team will recommend the version.

Do I need a primer before the base coat?

It depends on the material. On low surface energy plastics such as PP, a primer may be required. The recommendation is made after testing on the part.

How long does the UV base coat take to cure?

UV curing takes seconds, compared with tens of minutes for thermal oven systems. The exact time depends on the lamp and the film thickness.

Is there a UV base coat for TPU?

Yes. The UV Base Coat Flex is our flexible coating for TPU. It follows the part as it flexes. Compatibility with each TPU is confirmed by testing.

Does Corquímica make custom base coats?

Yes. The lab adjusts the formulation to the customer's part, substrate and equipment, with on-site technical support.
